The Project
The SPort Orientation for Kids project aims to implement the sports orientation method, “SportKompas,” within primary schools across different European cities. It aims at increasing social inclusion and activating children aged 8-10 by finding their own preferred sport using SportKompas and the exergaming. The outcome will deliver a new digital and innovative environment for physical education teachers and children on learning, experience, and self-evaluation, across may cities in Europe.
project summary
SPOKI, SPort Orientation for Kids, aims to implement the sports orientation method, “SportKompas,” within primary schools across various European cities. SportKompas, developed at Ghent University in 2011, is an innovative and scientifically grounded approach designed for children aged 8 to 10. The method assists children in identifying sports activities that align with their individual preferences and aptitudes.
The core philosophy behind SportKompas is to empower children with a sense of success, enjoyment, and motivation by guiding them towards sports that resonate with their interests. This not only fosters self-esteem but also contributes to their social integration and the cultivation of a healthy lifestyle. By concentrating efforts within schools, this project is inclusive, ensuring that every child, irrespective of diversity, culture, or socioeconomic background, can benefit.
Physical education teachers and coaches can leverage SportKompas test results to enhance children’s movement skills. Simultaneously, local governments gain valuable insights into children’s sports preferences to adapt their infrastructures: through cross-country knowledge transfer and accounting for geographical and cultural differences, this project aspires to establish a sustainable digital solution for cities in many EU countries. The expected result is an enhanced and sustainable capacity for collaboration, featuring both local implementation and international scale. The overarching societal impact aims to boost sports participation, health prevention, well-being, and integration on a multinational scale.
Project Objectives
1. Activate children's skills aged 8-10
By finding children’s own preferred sport using SportKompas, the project hopes to get more children involved in sports activities and exergaming. Furthermore, the project enhances skills development in sport by enhancing motor skills of children in primary schools and sports organizations.
2. Innovate the physical education environment
Thanks to the data collected during the tests and analysed through the digital platform Hylyght, teachers will have better knowledge of kids’ skills, therefore they will be able to provide more tailored exercises. Additionally, schools, cities, governments, and researchers will have insights into movement skills, sports preferences and health parameters of a population of children in a region or on EU level.
