Limerick Institute of Technology
Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) is an institution of higher education in Limerick, Ireland and is one of 14 member institutions of the Technological Higher Education Association (THEA). The Institute has campuses in Limerick city, one in both Thurles and Clonmel in County Tipperary and a regional learning centre in Ennis, County Clare. The main campus is located at Moylish Park adjacent to Thomond Park and houses the Faculty of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology and the Faculty of Business and Humanities. The School of Art & Design is located at the Clare Street and Clonmel campuses.
LIT offers courses at Level 6 (certificate) through Level 10 (PhD) whilst also catering for craft apprentices and adult and continuing education. The Institute has twice been named as The Sunday Times Institute of Technology of the Year in The Sunday Times University Guide, firstly in 2008 and again in 2013.
In the field of Sport LIT has a dedicated Department of Sport offering programmes in Sports Management, Sports Coaching & Development and Strength & Conditioning. It has dedicted sports faciliates at both it Moylish and Thurles campus, with the Thurles campus hosting a dedicated Sports Lab with leading edge technology and equipment.
Mission
LIT prepares learners for fulfilling and challenging futures, fostering the professional, intellectual, social, cultural and personal development of the individual. The hallmark of our educational philosophy is active learning through a fusion of theory and practice. We provide third and fourth level education, training and research, playing a pivotal role in the economic and socio-cultural development of our region. Our mission is to provide Active Leadership in Education, Enterprise and Engagement throughout Limerick City and County, Tipperary and Clare
Programmes are at Honours Degree (Level 8), Ordinary Degree (Level 7) and Higher Certificate (Level 6), with durations of study being 2, 3 and 4 years. All our Level 6 and 7 programmes offer graduates an opportunity to continue on to gain an Honours Degree (Level 8).
LITs Sports Strength & Conditioning programme is delivered by experienced industry professionals in purpose built facilities and our Sports Management and Sports Development & Coaching programmes combine the best of sport, business and management.
The Department of Sport offers the following programmes that require students to undertake placement and volunteer posts:
• Business Studies with Sports Management – Bachelor of Arts (Honours)
• Community Sports Development – Bachelor of Arts
• Sports Development & Coaching – Higher Certificate in Arts
• Sports Strength & Conditioning – Bachelor of Science (Honours)
• Sports Strength & Conditioning – Bachelor of Science
• Sports Strength & Conditioning – Masters of Science
