The Institute of Movement Sciences
The Institute of Movement Sciences is a research unit located at the Faculty of Sport Sciences (one of the 19 Faculties of the University of Aix-Marseille) on the campus of Luminy. The lab depends on both the University of Aix-Marseille (see attached file) and the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). The main objective of the lab is to provide a better understanding of human movement, in the field of sport in particular, by promoting interdisciplinary research.
The lab holds a leading position in the country in the sport domain due to is unique capacity to integrate knowledge coming from various disciplines (e.g., biomechanics, physiology, psychology, neurosciences, …) to better understand the process underlying movement production. More than 150 persons, including 60 academics, 20 engineers, 50 doctoral students and 10 post-docs are working in the lab at the moment. Several technological platforms (e.g., Virtual Reality Platform, Flying Area Platform) have been built these last years providing the researchers with high level tools to better understand movement underpinnings. The more recent platform, namely the Technosport, has been opened a couple of weeks ago. This platform is a meeting place between education, research, training and industry to create knowledge and innovation in sport. This research platform will meet the rigorous demands of high performance athletes and of manufacturers of sport equipments. More specifically, the Technosport will provide a wide variety of services such as: design, mechanical and ergonomic analysis; computational facilities for sport equipment or virtual design; design and development of dedicated research platforms; biomechanical, physiological and neuroscience studies.
